The Retrosexual Speaks

Why do there have to be so many fag hags and so few dag hags in the world? It's one of life's little ironies that, while women like hanging out with gay guys, it's the straight guys that want to hang out with women.

I therefore suggest that the gay guys give us straight guys a little advice in the 'how to make women hang out with you' department. Maybe, like, an Australian version of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Like, um ...

How To Be Gay (In a Non-Gay Way) When You're Not Gay

Hey, it makes sense if you don't think about it. Anyway, gay dudes who read this blog: what's the secret? Why do women want to hang out with you guys? Paul? Geoff? I'm looking in your direction...

Well, there are a number of reasons why this occurs. Firstly, there isn't any underlying motive of sex, so you can enjoy yourself without wondering if you're being overly encouraging, and without having to wipe slobber and drool from your person every few minutes; secondly, you get to have a man's perspective on men from someone who is likely to enjoy talking about such dauntingly deep and meaningful things; thirdly, you can swap ideas about beauty and body maintenance; fourth, gay guys are mysteriously sexy much more frequently than straight guys. Probably due to their enhanced femininity. The most beautiful men in the world are the ones who look like women. The sad fact is you can't actually achieve any of this without being gay, unless you pretend to be gay, which would defeat the purpose.

I have lots to say about this so I think I will hijack (or blogjack even) this topic....

Excellent Kathryn! Look forward to reading it.

Gem, I was aware of some of those reasons. But still a lot of stuff in there I hadn't thought about.

Re: you get to have a man's perspective on men from someone who is likely to enjoy talking about such dauntingly deep and meaningful things Come on, you're talking about men here. What's so dauntingly deep and meaningful about us? We're a bunch of ugly dumb bastards, as far as I'm concerned. Please tell me you were being ironic!

This topic is riveting. Might even be enough material for another post.

Even though I just posted a very stereotyped entry on this topic, I am hypocritical enough to suggest that there isn't necessarily a correlation between being feminine looking and being gay.

Anyways, feminine men don't do it for me. I like "real" men. I'd do the Malboro Man any day -- and he'd be good for an after shag fag.

I am posting this as anonymous, but this is Darlene here, who dropped in and can't resist leaving a comment on this topic.

My understanding is that there is an Australian version of Queer Eye coming out, but that's all superficial mumbo jumbo, anyway.

TimT, the stereotypical gay male/straight female relationship does work because of the lack of sexual tension (although the world is full of women who think they can turn that special gay boy they know). Also, I think anyone who has been marginalised can sometimes be more honest with themselves and others around them. I guess what I am saying is that straight (Australian) men can lack a capacity for introspection and self-awareness, even the ones you think are sensitive and caring.

It is trite, but I think women just want to be treated as equals and as friends. And, by the way, gay men do want to hang out with women, they just don't want to shag them.

Overly serious post on my part. BTW, like the site. Have never seen a resume on one before. You have heaps of clerical experience. Have you joined a temp agency? You could get a job in the public service and have plenty of time to blog and use the many resources available.

Hi Darlene. Over the past year have joined about twenty temping agencies. But I am working at the moment - as of yet, only casual part-time. This website started as a get-work experiment, but the tone and content has changed a bit since I've started work.

Still not sure what to do with the format of the website, since I still get work-tips, suggestions for work, etc - even though I'm not actively using it as a job-searching device at the moment...
