Metaphors for the Modern World

People who need help in the self-help section of the bookshop.

Violent anti-war demonstrators.

Telepaths who talk on the mobile phone.

Dictators who don't have the guts to lead.

Purchasers of self-help books are right up there with women who own hat stands and are best avoided. Still, it's lovely to know they they know they need some kind of help.

Speaking of hats (and we were, weren't we?), there's quite a good haberdashers right in the middle of Melbourne. Bowlers, boaters, top hats, Trilby's - all manner of topiary!

Yes, you know I live in Sydney, right? I'm sure we have a better haberdashers...somewhere...

There is no hattery like the Melbourne Hattery! They're on the corner of Flinders and St Kilda Road, down a little stairway underneath the Flinders Street station, which is itself a grand piece of Edwardian architecture. So going down there is like a little adventure.

Plan to get myself a bowler hat there one day, give it a rakish tilt, and wander down Collins Street ...

The last one is wrong: dictators require no followers; they are anti-leadership - they dictate. That's the whole point of being a dictator, yeh?

That shop has been there since before I was born, I think, which means it has definitely been there since before you were born Timmy. I'd long thought it had become a mere shop-front - or a mere facade of a shop (?) - maintained for sentimental / historic reasons. I'm astonished to hear that it's still a real shop, and the stairs are real and everything.

Racing season is on its way Tim and that means topiary for all!

Topiary for all, but never indoors.
