That Big Thing Near Spencer Street Wot They Kick The Ball Around In

AFL refuses to acknowledge Etihad Stadium

TELSTRA DOME will be officially renamed on Sunday, but as far as the AFL is concerned, don't mention the war.

The league is refusing to call the stadium by its new moniker - Etihad Stadium - after a dispute about pourage rights, sponsorship and club stadium deals.

The league is set to sue Telstra Dome management because the name conflicts with AFL sponsor Qantas, although no court date has been set.
Let's try and get this straight. Basically, a place that used to be called the Telstra Dome will now be called Etihad Stadium, except to certain people who for commercial reasons will be calling it the Qantas Park. Previously, most people had called the place the Colonial Stadium, or possibly the Commonwealth Oval.

They couldn't make this any clearer, could they?

It must be awfully fun for fans, going along to a place whose name changes day by day, and depending on the person you are hanging out with.

Maybe they could just call it That Big Thing Near Spencer Street Wot They Kick The Ball Around In.

Pourage Rights?

Is that what the Scots call theitr national breakfast dish?

Or the universal human right to work behind a bar?

An oval by any other name ...

perhaps they could take inspiration from a Fridge Tragic sticker instead, and just call it "glue sparkle chocolate glitter football worms Oval" [or something].

Save all the corporate kerfuffle and give the oval back to the boys and girls.

Except that it's not called Spencer St. It's called Southern Cross.

What about people behind just getting the "pourage right" and not spilling the drinks?"

... Pot pouri rights, the right to hang up smelly dead flowers in the middle of doorways for maximum inconvenience to customers...

Pawage rights: we get to say what dogs come to our stadium, and when.

No Baron - it will always be Spencer Street Station, at least until a few generations die off and the generations who know no better inherit the Earth.

Poor Rage Rights?

Interpret as you please!

I almost went for 'Spencer Street station' in the title, but ended up just referring to the street, to avoid any ambiguity.

Wonder how long before they rechristen Spencer Street the Brumby Boulevard? (Walked down the Bracks Boulevard the other day.)

Poor age rights, what we are all living in.

Have just spent two nights in a Brisbane apartment hotel which had a Hisense TV. The colours were appallingly bad, people's lips looked like a pair of some kind of albino worm. Getting naming rights on an arena won;t do much for their sales with a product like that.
